17C Antique Carved Period Oak Blanket Box Chest Coffer

This is a fine quality three panelled carved oak early 17th Century antique coffer / blanket box / chest.The coffer stands on classic stile legs with three panels to the centre with moulded rails and chamfered stiles, the crest rail having classic arched carved decorations with panels to the sides and triple panels to the back.The coffer is surmounted by a three panelled top.A fabulous coffer with good rich colour and patination.There is a label on the underside of the lid "3081".A fine quality antique piece of furniture.The coffer is of classic joined construction with dowelled mortise and tennon joints.

Date: The coffer dates from the early 17th Century.

Condition: The coffer is in good condition for its age, having one or two minor shrinkage shakes in the top, with some old dead woodworm holes in the centre panel, giving character and authenticity.The base has been strengthened from the inside and has later fitted hinges with some later fitted straps to hold the lid in place.The coffer unusually has had eight castors fitted, probably during the Victorian period, and where the lock was once fitted now has a wooden fillet in its place.
